I discovered Ann Pebbles a couple of days ago on XM radio. Even after hearing her sample countless times in Missy Elliott or Talib Kweli songs, I never heard the entire "I Can't Stand the Rain". After listening more closely, my first impression was that it sounded like a song Al Green would record. Thanks to artistsdirect:
"Like Al Green, her male counterpart in the Hi Records Memphis Soul revival of the early seventies, she made records with Willie Mitchell. Mitchell produced his trademark funky, yet refined soul sound with the help of a group of studio musicians, the Hi rhythm section"
I found a live version of the recording. Her voice sounds so much more raw and gritty than the recording.
